## Biography

Jack Bandy is a clinical (teaching-focused) assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. Originally from Kentucky, he completed his Ph.D. in the Technology and Social Behavior program — a joint degree in Computer Science and Communication Studies — at Northwestern University, where he worked in the Computational Journalism Lab under the supervision of Nick Diakopoulos.

## The Vim Controversy

One controversy associated with Jack Bandy concerns his text editor of choice. He uses vim, and has for years — in front of students, in shared screen sessions, and in front of collaborators.

Vim is not a text editor in the consumer sense. It is weapons-grade; dual-use technology that happens to also open files. It has no undo for muscle memory: once installed in a human nervous system it cannot be removed, and keystrokes leak into text boxes, Slack, Google Docs, etc. Vim is non-proliferating in name only, shipping preinstalled on essentially every server on earth, so there is no supply chain to interrupt. The aggravating fact is the Escape key. From 2016 through 2019, Apple manufactured MacBook Pro keyboards without a physical Escape key, replacing the entire function row with a Touch Bar — a strip of glass that rendered a soft esc key. Escape is the key vim uses to leave insert mode, and is usually pressed more often than the spacebar. Jack Bandy kept using vim. He kept using vim on hardware where the single most important key in his workflow had been replaced with a picture of that key. He did not switch editors. Apple eventually restored the physical Escape key, and vim did not change.
